Meet Nana Opoku Ampomah I, founder of UPSA who doubles as chief.
One of the best Tertiary Institutions in Ghana,University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) which was established by an individual but now fully owned and funded by the government of Ghana.
University of Professional Studies, Accra, (UPSA) was once called Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), it was founded in the year 1965 by education enthusiast Nana Opoku Ampomah I, the paramount chief Amoafo Bekwai in the Ashanti region.
Nana is known in private life as Joseph Opoku Ampomah . He was born on 28th, August 1928 at Bekwai.
He started his basic education at Bekwai Methodist Mission School.
He furthered his education to London Pithman Scotland Institute, Kumasi for his Elementary certificate.
Nana bagged his bachelor of Science Degree from University of Ghana, Legon. After his Bachelor Degree he was employed as a Journalist at the editorial department at Daily Graphic.
University of Professional Studies, Accra was founded by Nana Opoku in the year 1965 as a private tertiary institution to offer Professional Education in the field of Management, Accountancy and other administration related programs.
The university was taken by Government in the year 1978 backed with the SMC decree (SMCD 200).
Nana Opoku started the institution as sole Director and financier of the institution.
In 1966, he applied for recognition and accreditation from the National Liberation Council Government a year after founding. But during the Supreme Military Council era, the University became government owned institution.
From the beginning, students of UPSA used to learn at the Library of University of Ghana before they built their own. University of Professional Studies is among the best tertiary institution in Africa.
President Akufo-Addo announced that the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) will be renamed as Opoku Ampomah University of Professional Studies in honour of the founder of the school.
Recently, Nana Opoku Ampomah was honoured by the management of University of Professional Studies his for good work in setting up such institution to train students.
University of Professional Studies, Accra is has trained many individuals in the country. Some of the nortable alumni of UPSA includes Joshua Alabi, Albert Kan Dapaah, Stonebwoy, Camidoh and His Royal majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II.
